WHEN THE RAINS COME

When the rains come, the rains come
When the rains come, the rains come
When the rains come, the rains come
When the rains c o m e

[chorus]
When the rains come what will be washed away?
When the rains come what will remain; what will fade?
When the rains come what will stay the same?
When the rains come what will change?

When it rains—it tends to pour over and
When it rains—even the storm
Feels as small as a bird in the v a s t  s k y
Ever wonder where the sun goes when the clouds cry?

[verse 1]
Another city flooded
Mother Nature’s response to
Man-made ruckus
Death tolls in the 100s and 1000s
Now let’s be honest
That’s not counting the
Ones not found
The ones who had
No chance of
Making it out
Proud
Developers quick to find their waves in
Developing blueprints quick to exclude voices of
Communities they’re choosing to build in
Proof is in the putting in of
Single occupied condos disguised as
All-inclusive living
The cost of being is sky-rocketing;
Along with
Suicide rates and depression.
What happened to the love for education?
Instead
Most of us are
Losing our patience
Student loan debt crippling our paychecks
Stress eating away at our conscience
Straying away, wandering
Wondering where all the confidence went
Tempers and Temperatures
Steadily rising
Ignoring connections between
Nature and spirit science
Creative climate silenced and the
Economy stay sacrificing
Poor bodies despite
Already deprived ways of treating
Each other with basic humans rights
Who lives?
Who dies?
Who decides?
Who fights?
Who is offered a second chance at life?
We can look at the statistics
We can even graph ’em real nice
Some will only see a glimpse and
No bother looking twice — so
We amp up the hype:
We’ll add an image of a “little brown kid with big sad eyes” and
A nice little caption about them eating a bowl of rice then
We can talk about all the ways people are so nice
Donating their dollars only to save their pride but
What’s really in a statistic if
There are numbers that didn’t get mixed in? If
The bigger picture is significantly missing? If
The people in the picture didn’t give consent?
What messages are being sent
When we forget to honor the distance that
Still exists within the margins?
Imagine being a mixed kid
Seeing the world a little different
Wondering what the difference really is
Amidst
All kinds of ways of living
Juxtaposition positioning
Multiple dispositions
Frictions
In the ways we
Thought we should be thinking
Questioning motives in which we were raised in
Bathed in
Energy been absorbed since the playpen
Attempting to see the world through a new set of lens
Got us contemplating the power of our senses
Sensing there’s a deeper purpose to this madness
Money can and will buy happiness
If we let it but
Just as fast as it comes
It can disappear in an instant and
When it doesn’t come back then
What will we be left with?
Who will be around
to witness the magic of our presence?
Who will choose to remember us
when we are breathless?
Some live with more
Some live with less
Poor is a state of being
More than just the context
How dare
One say
Some
Are more worthy of being blessed?
Stand alone complex
Got the people feeling vexed…

[chorus]

[verse 2]
There’s so much more to the story
Can’t forget to mention these
Billion-dollar industries
Got us believing in the make believe.
Too focused on controlling the violence
Supplying the fuel for the riots
Administering doses keeping the people                              quiet
Will we rise together? Or
Will we internalize the silence?
Will we shed light on the shadows that have been keeping us frightened?
Outta sight; outta mind,
Won’t keep the chest from tightening
The time is ticking
One moment in the making
What do we make of it,
if we never even make it?
A volcano just erupted
A glacier is still melting
Habitats and homes are being
displaced by the dozens
Young one’s stuck wondering
What will the future become? What will be done? and
What will be undone?
What will be destroyed? and
What will be rebuilt?
What will evolve?
Will anything be left still?
When our present actions impact our timelines
Will we live to tell?
Another forest just went up in flames
Another forest just went down in chains
Unnatural reoccurrences happening at such an alarming rate
Who’s asking for change? and
Who’s making change reign?
Who’s controlling the grains from the pla(i)nes?
How many hands touched the food on your plate?
Do you know where your clothing was made?
How many caves it took
little fingers to retrieve
the metal for the phone
you keep
wanting to upgrade?
What about them J’s?
NIKE says
“Just Do It”
Just buy them kicks
made by the hands of
modern day slaves
Wait
Matta fact;
We all stuck in cages
Paid by our tax payer wages and
Speaking of wages
Minimum wage don’t
support livable ways
I SAID: MINIMUM WAGE DON’T
SUPPORT LIVABLE WAYS
UNIMAGINABLE RAGE
UNFATHOMABLE HATE
IRREVERSIbLE FATE
For whose sake?
So many walking through a mental maze
stuck in a foggy haze
drinking to wash away the days
attempting to mask the pain
by numbing it away
Pretending it’s okay
How do we stop the cycle before
it’s too late?
Or
Is it too late?
Seeing black and white
Amidst shades of grey
When does one question why they gave?
What makes one begin to pray?
How much will it truly cost to save
Sacred space from
Extorted trade?

[chorus]
